TMJ Treatment
TMJ Symptoms

- Facial or jaw pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Sensitive teeth or loose teeth
- Clenching, grinding, or clicking of the jaw
TMJ Diagnosis
The first step in diagnosing TMJ is helping your jaw relax with a TENS unit. The TENS gently uses light electrical pulses to help your jaw muscles relax. This allows waste products like lactic acid to drain out of your muscles, relieving pain and tension as well as helping your jaw move into its optimal position.
Once your jaw is relaxed, we use the Myotronics K7 system to measure and evaluate your bite and its function. The K7 system takes gentle, non-invasive measurements of your jaw and delivers comprehensive data about your bite and the TMJ joint so that we can develop a targeted treatment plan. We also use sonography as an evaluation tool, which helps us listen to the TMJ sounds and compare them to normal data. We evaluate the duration and exact location of the sounds during jaw opening and closing.
Treatment Options
Neuromuscular dentistry offers non-invasive treatments for any TMJ disorder. With neuromuscular dentistry, Dr. Mitchmore can determine the optimal position of the jaw by measuring the relaxed position of your head and neck muscles and then repositioning the jaw to achieve those exact measurements. Repositioning may include wearing an orthotic device or adjusting the bite through the application of dental restorations.
Another option is to relax the muscles using therapeutic Botox®. These simple injections can cause pain relief and loosen your jaw muscles.
Proper TMJ treatment usually results in complete pain relief, and we also find that many patients experience a moderate to significant change in their facial appearance following completion of the treatment. Patients with recessed lower jaws may have a new profile, accenting a stronger jawline and chin. Areas of the jaw that may have protruded excessively will be pulled back in alignment.
In addition, all the restorations necessary to correct the bite will be created with consideration to the aesthetic result of the smile. Not only will this procedure correct pain, it will give you the smile you have always dreamed about. No more headaches and a beautiful, new smile… It’s life changing!
